Horseback Riding in West Glacier

West Glacier is a small mountain town nestled in the picturesque canyon that serves as the gateway to beautiful Glacier National Park. The businesses in West Glacier have been providing a variety of services to Glacier Park visitors since the early 1900s, not the least of which has been horseback riding!

Horseback riding in West Glacier is characterized by trails that meander through the forested mountains and lush meadow valleys, not to mention - awesome views of Desert Mountain, Strawberry Mountain and the Glacier Park skyline. For 2013, our West Glacier Corral is scheduled to be open from May 18th through the beginning of October, weather dependent. We offer the following wonderful trail rides from our West Glacier Corral:

West Glacier Trail Rides

Lodgepole Loop

This easy, one hour ride is a great option for young children and novice or nervous riders. As you gently stroll through lodgepole forest, you'll have the perfect amount of time to get comfortable on the horses and get a taste for what it's like to explore the area on horseback. The one hour ride is $35 per person.

Glacier Gateway

This two hour ride is our most popular trail for experienced and beginner riders alike. The longer duration allows you to cover more land and take in more scenery than the one hour, including views of the Strawberry and Rainwater Mountains and a brief glimpse into the snow capped peaks of Glacier Park. The two hour ride is $60 per person.

Glacier Lookout

This half day ride offers fantastic views of Strawberry Mountain and into Glacier National Park. You will spend 1.5 to 2 hours riding through a lodgepole/aspen forest while slowing gaining elevation until you reach the Glacier Lookout lunch spot. There, you'll dismount the horses and have time to enjoy your own snacks or a hearty sack lunch provided by the Glacier Rawhide Trading Post as you gaze at the snowcapped peaks of the Glacier Park skyline. After lunch, you'll head back to the corral at a leisurely pace. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for deer and bear! The half day ride is $105 per person (plus $10 for the sack lunch).

Mountain View

This full day trail ride allows you to spend an entire day exploring the forest and mountains of West Glacier on horseback. Watch the light change through the trees from morning to afternoon and experience the breathtaking beauty of Rainwater Mountain, Strawberry Mountain and Desert Mountain as well as the Glacier Park skyline from a variety of lookout points. The full day trail ride is recommended for experienced riders as guests on this ride will spend 6 to 8 hours in the saddle with an hour break for a hearty sack lunch provided by the Glacier Rawhide Trading Post. The full day ride is $160 per person (plus $10 for the sack lunch).

In addition to guided horseback trips, Swan Mountain Outfitters offers a wide range of other fun, family activities in West Glacier, including:

Overnight Horseback Trips

Pack trips are reminiscent of a different era, when all you needed was a cowboy hat and your trusty steed to make it through the wilderness. Times have certainly changed since then, but our overnight horseback trips allow even those with the most jam packed Glacier National Park vacation schedule to experience a small slice of this deep rooted Montana tradition.

Guests check in at the West Glacier Corral behind the Rawhide Trading Post at 9:00 in the morning. While we go over important safety information with you, our experienced guides will be packing up your gear in preparation for our overnight adventure. We will spend the day exploring the forest, enjoying a hearty lunch on the trail and taking in the beauty of Glacier. In the late afternoon, we'll arrive at our Outfitter Camp, complete with wall tents and a fire pit. You'll have time to get settled before indulging in a traditional cowboy dinner with all the trimmings. You'll cap off the night, fireside, gazing at more stars than you ever knew existed. The next morning, we'll have our fill of a hearty Montana breakfast before hitting the trail for a half day morning ride arriving back to the Corral just before noon.

The overnight horseback trip is $295 per person. Sleeping bags can be rented for an additional $5 per bag.

Ride, Wine and Dine Tour

Combine two favorite Montana pastimes – horseback riding and having a steak! Throw in a bottle of wine and you've got the makings of a wonderful evening! The Ride, Wine and Dine Tour begins with a one hour horseback ride at dusk, which is one of the best times to ride. The light from the fading sun dances through the trees as the forest awakens from the midday heat. After your horseback ride, you'll head into the Rawhide Restaurant and Steak House for their famous mesquite broiled steak or prime rib and a bottle of wine! Don't worry – we haven't forgot about the kiddos - kids plates and pricing for this tour are available as well!

The Ride, Wine and Dine Tour is $65 per adult or $55 for kids and non-wine drinkers.

Cowboy Cookout

Like the Ride, Wine & Dine Tour, the Cookout combines the favorite Montana pastimes of horseback riding and having a steak, but adds a little more adventure! You'll check in at the West Glacier Corral at 3:00pm (this time is subject to change for late season trips). Your cookout adventure begins with a one and a half hour horseback ride out to our Outfitter Camp. There, you'll dismount your horses and enjoy a light appetizer as you gaze into the West Side skyline of Glacier. Meanwhile, your guide will prepare a traditional cowboy dinner of steaks over open flame, corn on the cob, baked beans, green salad, a roll and s'mores for dessert. After dinner, you'll hop back on your trusty stead and head back to the Corral between 8 and 9pm, just as the sun sets over a perfect Montana evening.

The Cowboy Cookout is $120 per person.

Please keep in mind that availability of all trails and activities is subject to change. In the interest of safety, Swan Mountain Outfitters reserves the right to change or cancel a ride at any time due to unfavorable trail conditions, inclement weather or the presence of wildlife.
